Parasite research

Parasites have the potential to limit the growth of Australian fishing industries through mortality, morbidity and reduced marketability. A majority of the parasites of recreational, commercial and farmed southern Australian fish have not been collected, studied or described. Here at the Marine Parasitology Laboratory in Adelaide, South Australia, we study the parasites of important marine fish species.

The Australian Biological Resources Study and the Fisheries Research and Development Corporation fund a current three year research project to aid the discovery of new and potentially pathogenic parasite species. On this website, you will find information on these parasites such as what they look like, where you’ll find them on the fish and how they may impact on their fish host.

Information is presented in printable posters under the ‘Fish hosts’ menu item.  Please revisit regularly as we will be updating and adding more posters as we work on more fish species and discover more parasites!
